The last bark

The barks no longer were sharp or fierce ,the growls could hardly be heard.

“One of the best guard dogs we have had.”

Simran commented,taking a deep breathe to avoid choking with the sadness she felt as  remembered the three attempts of robbery Selu had prevented just by sniffing out the arms even before the robbers could touch the door of the bank

“But even the best have to come to rest”

Atul tried to console Simran as the van with  “Woof Animal shelter” written in huge fonts on it with a picture of happy looking dog on it stopped at the entrance.

“Heard it is one of the best shelters in the country” added Atul. 

Simran looked towards Selu as it looked back at his owner, Simran who had got him to the bank when he was just a few months old. As their eyes met for one last time, it was as if both were reliving all their memories once more before Selu barked one last time towards Simran before  hopping on to the van.
